To make sure you receive messages correctly, you must make sure that you give permission to push notifications to the app, or else the messages won't load correctly for you without reloading the app.

Go to the messaging tab of the app, the app will automatically load all messages between yourself and your employer.

You can type a new message into the message input and tap send to send your message.
